Why can't anyone find my website? The 7 most common causes

Your website is online but Google does not show it. Discover the 7 most common causes and what you can do about them.

Is your website secure?

Many small business owners think: I do not have a webshop, so I do not need to worry about security. But securing a website is not only about protecting customer data. It is also about your findability, your reputation and the trust visitors have in you.

What are the most common security problems?

No HTTPS. If your website starts with http:// instead of https://, every visitor sees a warning. Google penalises this. An SSL certificate is now included with most hosting packages.

Outdated software. WordPress, plugins and themes that are not updated have known vulnerabilities. Hackers use these to misuse your website for spam or malware.

Missing security headers. Technical settings that protect your visitor’s browser. Invisible to visitors, but visible to Google and to those with bad intentions.

No privacy policy or cookie banner. Legally required in the EU if you use analytical or marketing cookies.

Why would a hacker target me?

You do not need to be a large business. Automated scripts scan the internet for vulnerable WordPress installations. Your website can be used to send spam or redirect visitors to fraudulent sites.

The result: Google puts your website on a warning list, your hosting provider takes your site offline, and visitors see a message saying your site is dangerous.

Question: My web designer built my website. Are they responsible? Answer: It depends on your agreement. Without a maintenance contract, nobody is actively working on your security.

Question: How do I keep WordPress secure? Answer: Update WordPress, plugins and theme regularly. Remove plugins you do not use. Use strong passwords. Make regular backups.
